SHILLONG, JAN 8: The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) has reiterated its commitment to push for the inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
“Yes, for the inclusion (of Khasi language) in the Eighth Schedule, the VPP will continue to fight for this,” VPP spokesperson Dr Batskhem Myrboh said.
He emphasized that the Khasi language is on par with other regional languages already included in the Eighth Schedule, questioning the central government’s stance on its inclusion.
“If you compare the Khasi language with other languages from the region that have been included, the Khasi language is not lacking behind, but we don’t know what is in the mind of the central government,” Dr Myrboh stated.
Interestingly, he added that Mizoram’s Mizo language, widely used as an official language, is yet to be included in the Eighth Schedule, highlighting the perceived inconsistency in the government’s approach.
Dr Myrboh refrained from commenting on the state government’s efforts, citing the long-standing demand that predates the current administration.
“With regard to the efforts of the state government, I cannot say because this has been a long demand right from the Congress governments in the past and even this (present) government”.
