Report on Langpih accepted

SHILLONG, NOV 24: Assam government has accepted the report of the Justice (Retd) PC Phukan Commission of Inquiry that probed the May 14, 2010-police firing at Langpih killing four Khasi villagers and injuring eight others, chief minister Mukul Sangma informed the assembly on Monday.

Replying to a call attention notice moved by HSPDP legislator Ardent Basaiawmoit on Monday, Sangma said, “However, the same is yet to be placed in the Assam Legislative Assembly as the finalization of the Action Taken Report is under process and under active consideration of the Assam government.”

The Assam government has also informed that it is taking necessary action for providing financial assistance of Rs 5000 to the victim, Saraswati Mogor for damage to her tea stall and financial assistance to the eight injured persons at the rate paid by Meghalaya government as per recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry, Sangma informed.

Sangma also informed that the state government has already sanctioned ex-gratia payment of Rs 3 lakhs each to the next of kin of the four deceased on May 28, 2010 besides financial assistance to the injured persons ranging from Rs 5000 to Rs 25, 000 depending on the nature of the injury.

Earlier this month, the Assam government paid compensation of Rs 2 lakhs to the families of the deceased killed in the Langpih firing.- By Our Reporter
