Border youths slams MLA

SHILLONG, SEPT 20: Youths of a remote village in the border area of West Jaintia Hills District today slammed the Nartiang sitting legislator Sniawbhalang Dhar for allegedly making false promises by delaying the construction of a road.

The people of the Lapangap, a village near Khanduli located along the inter-state border with Assam, have been demanding the construction of a 9 kilometers kutcha road for past many years.

Addressing newsmen here on Wednesday, Saikel Sumer said that when Dhar was the PWD minister, he had assured a delegation which met him in Shillong that the construction work of road will start from the month of October.

“However four years have gone, the village is still facing hardship due to absence of better road connectivity. During elections, they assured us that our problems will be addressed but once elected they forget everything,” he said.

Stating that the village has been totally neglected by the state government, Sumer said that people are facing lot of difficulties especially during monsoon season when the water level of a river rises in absence of a bridge to connect the village.

“We therefore urged the state government to speed up the construction of the road and a bridge for the village,” he said.

Another village youth Augustan Timung said it was only during the tenure of the former MLA Draison Kharshiing that a kutcha road was constructed for the village but it was left unattended for many years.

He said that many precious lives have been lost due to absence of proper road.

On the other hand, Timung said there is also no health sub-centre and people have to travel 9 km to reach to the nearest health centre at Khanduli.

According to him, a dispensary which was established by a doctor in 1972 was also shifted from the village to Shangpung for reasons not known to them.

He said that road connectivity and better health care facilities are the main needs of the people in the area.

Meanwhile, he said that despite various atrocities of the Assam government on the villagers, yet there has been no help from the side of the state government to address this issue.
