SHILLONG, JUNE 28: The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya (GCCM) has sought the intervention of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) into the recent dress discrimination against a tribal Khasi woman by the Delhi Golf Club.

In a letter to the NCST chairperson Nand Kumar Sai, GCCM chairman John F Kharshiing said, “We urge your intervention to investigate, inquiry, bring to justice and report to President of India, who as per Article 388 A, Section 5,6, &7, shall cause the reports to be placed before both houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) this grave injustice against our tribal Khasi woman by the Delhi Golf Club on June 25.”

He also said the non-fulfillment of the national commitment and failure to comply to the numerous directives from the NCST to Union Ministry of Home Affairs, regarding the implementation of the Instrument of Accession and Annexed Agreement 17 August 1948, is the cause for constitutional discrimination against the tribal Khasi Jaintia and Garo people by the majority of India.

Meanwhile, the GCCM also urged the urgent intervention of the NCST to bring about much required amendments to Article 338A so as to include a charter of tribal rights and to make submission of reports before Parliament time bound.
