HYC took out 93 km protest rally

IMG-20170822-WA0015SHILLONG, AUG 22: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) today took out a 93-km-long rally walking all the way from Nongstoin to Shillong as a mark of protest against the step-motherly treatment of the Congress-led state government towards the West Khasi Hills District.

Around 70 activists of the HYC-Nongstoin Circle began their protest journey from Nongstoin, the district headquarter, at 7 am on Tuesday morning notwithstanding inclement weather. The protest rally will take at least three days to complete.

“We are ready to sacrifice our today for your better tomorrow” – was the slogan shouted by the members while taking out the rally.

“The rally is to protest against the state government under the leadership of the chief minister Mukul Sangma for its failure to bring various developments to the district,” HYC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said here.

He said the HYC is also condemning the state government refusal to consider implementation of the 14-point of demands which include the Inner Line Permit (ILP) System and other anti-influx laws to protect the interest of the indigenous community and its people.

Earlier, the HYC has also launched its Save Hynniewtrep Mission to pressurize the state government to come up with strong laws to check influx while outrightly rejecting the proposed implementation of the comprehensive mechanisms which include setting up of entry/exit points.

According to the Council, the comprehensive mechanism proposed by the Mukul-led government cannot be compared to the effectiveness of the Inner Line Permit System.

Meanwhile, the HYC-NC has also demanded proper road connectivity in Nongstoin, setting up institutions like a government college, higher secondary school, a vocational training centre, a harvesting centre, ITI, playground, health care facilities, blood banks.
