SHILLONG, OCT 21: Following the suspension of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) chief executive member PN Syiem from the Congress party, some of the Congress leaders from Mawsynram expressed their solidarity with their MLA/MDC and also declared themselves as suspended from the Congress.
More than hundred units of the 12 Areas under the Mawsynram Block Congress Committee (MBCC), termed the decision of the MPCC to suspend Syiem as ‘abuse of power’.
The decision to treat themselves as suspended was taken during a meeting of the leaders and functionaries of Mawsynram Block Congress Committee (MBCC) held on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Syiem.
The MBCC was recently dissolved by the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) after its decision to put two-time MLA/MDC PN Syiem under three-year suspension for his anti-party activities.
The MPCC also appointed Khelor Kharnaior as the new president of the MBCC, which is alleged to have been done without consultation with the leaders and functionaries of the block.
Announcing their decision after the meeting, MBCC asst general secretary Banraplang Hynniewta said, “We have decided to consider ourselves suspended as a mark of condemnation against the MPCC’s abusing its power.”
He said that the Congress has taken a hasty decision to suspend Syiem without issuing any show cause despite claim of being a discipline party.
“It has also dissolve the MBCC without any consultation with the leaders and functionaries,” Hynniewta said while pointing out that most of the new functionaries of the MBCC are not from Mawsynram area.
He said the decision of the MPCC is not acceptable given the fact that it was the support and hard work of the party men that ensured Syiem to win the MLA election twice.
Stating that the decision to put Syiem under 3-year suspension is with an aim to end his political career, Hynniewta said, “We want to make our stand clear that we are committed to follow our leader (Syiem).”
The aggrieved party leaders and workers of Mawsynram also send a strong message to the Congress that they will ensure that Syiem will win the upcoming 2018 state elections.
“Let him (Syiem) contest as an independent or from any non-Congress political parties we will ensure that victory will be on his side,” Hynniewta said.
The MBCC leader said that they would prefer to wait for Syiem to take a call before deciding to resign from the Congress.-By Our Reporter
