TURA, MAR 28: Branding the National People’s Party (NPP) candidate Purno Agitok Sangma as “Promise all Sangma”, chief minister Mukul Sangma told an election rally at Williamnagar on Friday that he will keep his promise for bringing about holistic development of Meghalaya”

Campaigning for the Congress Tura Lok Sabha candidate  Darly William Momin, the chief minister assured an election rally in Williamnagar, the district headquarter of East Garo hills, of his  government’s commitment for accelerated growth which he said will be resolve by holding discussion with the stakeholders.

The chief minister told thousands of villagers who had converged to Williamnagar from different villages of the district the Congress party’s commitment to improve education, rural infrastructure and putting thrust on agriculture.

The chief minister also accused the NPP of misleading the people and said, “Purno Sangma led government in 2008 had scrapped many ambitious government projects and now is saying that my government is a failure”.

The chief minister branded Purno as “Promise all Sangma” and promised to continue his agenda for holistic development of Meghalaya”

Tura goes for polling on April 9.

Williamnagar is a Congress stronghold represented by social welfare minister Deborah C Marak.

For the villagers in the remote East Garo Hills areas  the important issue remains lack of development even though the state government has launched several welfare programmes but the people of this region are yet to receive its benefit.

A village headman Sokman Marak said, “We have constructed an approach road to our village under MG-NREGA scheme, which is yet to be black topped. Our village depends mainly on agriculture. In the absence of good connectivity to nearby market, we have to literally walk for miles to sell our agricultural produce”

Victor Sangma , a resident of Williamnagar, however  said he and others from the areas do not expect much from the government and would be happy if the long pending bridge over Simsang river is completed.  He informed that the government has promised to complete the bridge this year.

For an unemployed educated youth Mikseng Arengh the parliamentary election does not matter much neither does who wins the Tura parliamentary seat and which party forms the government at the center as long as that government is committed to provide jobs to educated youths in Garo hills.- From Our Correspondent
