NPP will not cross single digit: Mukul

SHILLONG, OCT 11: Hitting back at the National People’s Party (NPP), Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today said that the NPP will remain at “single digit” in the upcoming state assembly elections, to be held early next year.

“As far as NPP is concerned, I am assuring you that they will remain at single digit. They will not cross single digit (in 2018),” Mukul told reporters at the sidelines of a cabinet meeting held here on Wednesday.

He was reacting to the recent statement made by NPP national chief Conrad K Sangma in a meeting held at Pynursla last week, where he assured that the chief minister will lose from both the seats – Ampati and Songsak (a stronghold of the NPP) he is going to contest.

Amused by this comment, Mukul said, “Few leaders of the NPP think that they have become so strong and powerful that they can defeat anybody.”

Claiming that he already received “survey reports” of other political parties, the chief minister said that there is no iota of doubt that the ruling Congress will be voted back to power in the upcoming elections.

“I have already received the survey reports of other political parties, so we will have a stable government, a very strong and stable government. However one or two constituencies where there is a vacuum created we don’t mind as simple as that,” he stated.

Asked, Mukul however said that people will criticize the performance of a government when elections are just round the corner.

“Who will not criticize as election is coming, In the past we have work with regional parties as we come closer to election then while being in the government, you will hear members from different political parties criticize among themselves, there is nothing new in this,” he added.
