Shella road repair

SHILLONG, APR 25: The State government has sanctioned Rs 18 crore for black topping of an 8 km road stretching from Mawsmai to Shella in East Khasi Hills District.This was informed by the Secretary of Public Work Department (Roads & Buildings) B Kharbuli to a delegation of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Laittyra and Sohbar units which met him here on Tuesday.

“He (Kharbuli) has assured us that the work for black topping of the road will begin from May and is targeted to be completed within 24 months,” KSU-LU president B Lain told reporters.

It was also informed that the work has been allotted to the CCL company which will be using German technology for construction of the road, he said.

He said that the purpose of the meeting was to put pressure on the department to speed up the work after the road was left unattended for more than three years.

Asked,  Lamin said that the dilapidated condition of the road has not only caused hardship to the people of the area but has to a great extent affected tourists who visits famous tourist spots like Thangkarang, where the “Khohramhah” is located.

He also said that the taxi drivers are also forced to hike the fares, which people cannot blame them due to the deplorable condition of the road.
