SHILLONG, OCT 9: Shillong will have a centre for performing arts by 2018, which will be a Rs 150-crore project by 2018. The centre will be capable of hosting national and international events connecting Meghalaya and North East with the rest of the world through creative arts, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said.

“Shillong will be proud to have one of the best infrastructures to host any kind of events of national as well as international level,” Sangma said while inaugurating the three-day 18 degrees festival which got underway on Thursday.

Sangma informed the government has sanctioned an amount of Rs 151.33 crores for setting up of Shillong International Centre for Performing Arts at a 35 acre land allotted in the New Shillong Township (NST), Mawdiangdiang.

“The project will be completed by 2018,” Sangma said adding that the government’s is aiming very high and he has reason to believe that everyone should be optimist and take performing and creative arts forward and translate them into action.

According to Sangma, this will give a lot of scope to young and vibrant youths whose hidden talents are yet to explore and tap.

Stating that Meghalaya should be known for the good things, Sangma said the main objective of the festival is how to connect the state with the rest of the world besides reaching out to the youth and provide a platform for them and those who would like to showcase their talents.

It may be mentioned here, the state government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for holding the three-day festival.

Stating that Arts and Culture was usually looked at as a minor department, Sangma  said, “The only thing that the department has been doing in the previous years was to extent support to people engage in the field of performing arts with limited and small amount budget channelize through the MLA schemes.” He, however, informed that this time the government has realized that the department can do much more through performing arts.

Emphasizing on the need to create positive stories through the festival, Sangma said, “It is a question of identifying the strength that we have and that strength itself should be the main reason in driving the people to positivity, it should revolve around the positive thinking which will create positive stories.”

Sangma said by holding programmes like 18 Degree it will create a platform for talents of the young boys and girls where they are given a platform to showcase their talents which otherwise has remain untapped.
