SHILLONG, SEPT 22: Two persons were apprehended along with gold biscuits worth over Rs 22 lakh by the border security force (BSF) from the international Indo-Bangla border in East Khasi Hills District on Friday.
They have been identified Kolet Khongjee (53) and Zuhep Khongram (39) both residents of Nongtyngur village under Pynursla police station.
From their possession, a total of 7 gold biscuits worth approximately Rs 22, 65, 410 were recovered. An Alto 800 bearing registration number ML 05Q 0551 was also seized.
BSF officials informed that the duo revealed that they received the consignment from one Bangladeshi national identified as Raja of Panthumai under Gowinghat Police Station, Sylhet District located near Lyngkhat-Pyrdiwah border road.
“It was also revealed that the gold buiscuits were supposed to be delivered to some person at Shillong. Name of some persons involved also surfaced in this illegal trade of gold from across the border,” they said.
According to the officials, the BSF is also showing extra alertness to prevent any trans-border crime on the International border.
In another incident, the BSF also apprehended three persons while they were trying to smuggle some items from Bangladesh to India side through hume pipe.
They had been trying to load some suspicious items in a Bolero Max pickup and move towards village Kapasipara just on the zero line.
The three have been identified as Ekub Ali (30) of Tangaon, Parash Ali (25) of Pipulbaribothunder PS-Mankachar, Distt.-Dhubri (Assam) and Khalsin M Sangma (25) of South Kapasipara in South Garo Hills. One vehicle Bolero Max pickup (ML 08 E 8358), 190 kgs of fresh fish and some Indian currency were seized from their possession.
Meanwhile, the BSF said it has stepped up its special drive against the smugglers and intensified its operations on Indo-Bangladesh Border to prevent nefarious design of trans-border criminal to maintain tranquility in bordering areas of Meghalaya state.
Apprehended persons along with seized items handed over to concern department for further legal action.
