SHILLONG, JULY 2: Two persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in making offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks on social media even as police informed that a new software instruments are being put to use to monitor activities on social media.
The arrested persons have been identified as Manbhalang Nongspung and Fuller Strong Kharsyiemlieh, Special SP, CID R Muthu said.
He said that the Cyber Crime Wing of the state has started to take legal action as per provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000, The Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008 and Indian Penal Code in various cases.
According to him, so far 11 cases have been registered for offensive, inflammatory and derogatory remarks on the social media.
“A number of persons have been questioned and their mobile phones have been seized which gave evidence about the inciting materials which they had posted or forwarded and due legal action is being taken against them,” Muthu said.
The Spl SP further stated that the action was taken in view that it is being widely recognized that posting of inflammatory and inciting materials on social media platforms can have serious consequences.
He said that the role of social media with respect to the disturbances in Shillong last month also had drawn the attention of all the members of the society.
Meanwhile, the Spl SP informed that new software instruments are being put to use by the Cyber Crime Wing to monitor the social media round the clock.
“Help has been taken from various central government agencies and departments as well as from a renowned technological institute in Delhi to augment the capabilities of the cyber crime wing,” he said.
Muthu also added that the social media platforms like Google, Facebook etc have also positively responded to the request of the cyber crime wing to give information about persons who have been putting inciting materials on social media and proper legal instruments are being used to obtain such information.
Further, the state police appealed to all the citizens to cooperate with the department and its cyber crime wing so that no unscrupulous elements can take advantage and create fake news and incite passions.
The social media users are also advised not to post or propagate any unsubstantiated news or reports and that it would be prudent to check all these things with the local police.
Similarly, the police also advised the administrators of social media groups to ensure that no offensive materials are posted by any members of the group which can invite legal action.
