SHILLONG, MAR 22: Two Independents-sixty-five year old Ivoryna Shylla, a former president of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha and her former party colleague Denis Siangshai- filed their nomination papers for the upcoming April 9-Lok Sabha elections for  Shillong parliamentary seat.

Both filed their nominations papers on Saturday, the last day of filing the nominations.

Shylla, a resident of Laitumkhrah, is the lone lady candidate. Speaking to reporters, Shylla lamented on the unwillingness of other women leaders to come forward and contest the elections.

“It is due to this reason, I decided to join the electoral fray,” she claimed.

Shylla had contested the 1993 assembly polls from the then Laitumkhrah constituency as a BJP candidate. She, however, lost the elections.

The other Independent candidate forty nine years old Siangshai (49) is a resident of Mookhep village under Lad Rymbai in East Jaintia Hills district.

Siangshai was one of the candidates in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. He had also then contested as an Independent and polled 7,032 votes. For the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, he had sought for a BJP ticket, but Shibun Lyngdoh was instead given the ticket.

Altogether eight candidates will now wrestle with each others for the Shillong parliamentary seat.

Scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on Monday at 11:00 am while the last date of withdrawal of candidature is March 26 up to 3:00 pm.- By Our Reporter
