Shillong, Feb 12: The Meghalaya government has requested to the union government for deployment of three additional companies of either the para-military force or Assam police exclusively for elections duty during the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) elections.

The elections to KHADC and JHADC are slated for February 24. Home department official informed this website on Wednesday that the request has already been communicated to the union government. He said, “The three companies of either the central force or the Assam police will be deployed only during the district council elections in Khasi and Jaintia hills. After the elections are over they will return back from where they had been deployed to Meghalaya.”

Earlier the Meghalaya government had also requested for additional four companies of CRPF to be deployed for counter insurgency operations in the militant infested Garo hills districts. One company of the CRPF has already been deployed in Shallang in West Khasi hills district.

The home department official also informed that the higher up of the CRPF had visited the state recently to inspect the areas where the other three companies are going to be deployed. He said, “They had raise certain issues pertaining to availability of the infrastructures like drinking waters, toilets and other necessities in the other three places where companies are going to be deployed.

The official said the state government is now providing all the basic infrastructures required for the companies in the other three camps and once completed, the remaining companies will be deployed.

The government is planning to have a permanent camp of the companies across the Simsang river in East Garo hills and also in the village from where the GNLA commander- in-chief Sohan D Shira hails. – By Our Reporter
