SHILLONG, AUG 16: A total of 344 cattle and contraband items worth more than Rs 73 lakh were seized by the border security force (BSF) from along the Indo-Bangla international border during the last four days.
According to BSF officials, these were seized from areas under the two districts – East Khasi Hills District and West Jaintia Hills District.
On Wednesday, 28 cattle worth approximately more than Rs 5.8 lakh was seized from the border in East Khasi Hills District while 41 cattle worth around Rs 7.2 lakh were seized in West Jaintia Hills District.
They said that the smugglers trying to smuggle cattle from the unfenced area but the alert BSF jawan always foil their attempts.
The BSF officials further said that 444 kms Indo-Bangladesh border with Meghalaya State interspersed with riverine, dense forests and hilly terrains which provide favourable conditions for cattle smuggling and other crimes.
The increasing demand in Bangladesh before forthcoming `Eid-ul-Azha’ and high profit involved lures smugglers to indulge in cattle smuggling despite of heavy vigil by the Sentinels of  Border, they said while adding that inclement weather also plays supportive role for these criminals.
Meanwhile, the alert BSF troops are heavily engaged in curbing this menace which has suddenly increased in Meghalaya since last few months.
