6 more die of COVID-19, 297 new cases detected in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, MAY 7: Meghalaya has reported six more deaths due to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the total to 199 on Friday.

The state recorded 297 new cases, taking the total number of active cases to 2,466 while 176 have recovered from the disease, pushing up the number of recoveries to 16,262.

Eighty-five year-old Jenny Marki Dkhar of Umpling Shillong was declared brought dead at Bethany hospital on Thursday evening. The cause of death was due to Covid positive, known case of type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension, DHS (MI) Dr Aman War said.

Two patients – Anil Mandal (39) of Margherata, Assam and Memories Kongwang (55) of Umsyiem village, Pontung, Pynursla –also passed away on the same day at the NEIGRIHMS hospital and Shillong civil hospital respectively.

While Mandal died due cardiac arrhythmia with sepsis with right lower limb deep venous thrombosis, Covid positive with pulmonary embolism, Kongwang succumbed  due to type 1 respiratory failure with Covid pneumonia with type 2 diabetes mellitus with hypertension.

The three other patients who succumbed to the disease on Friday include Desplin Marbaniang (55) of Lad Mawreng, Mawphlang at Dr H Gordon Roberts hospital, Kleeon Thabah (60) of Sohiong at Bethany hospital and Tony Singha (37) of Lumjingshai at Shillong civil hospital, he said.

Dr War said the new cases include 180 in East Khasi Hills district, 58 Ri Bhoi district, 22 West Garo Hills district, 10 West Jaintia Hills district, 9 South West Garo Hills district, 5 West Khasi Hills district, 4 North Garo Hills district, 4 East Garo Hills district, 3 East Jaintia Hills district, 1 South West Khasi Hills district and 1 South Garo Hills district.

He informed that of 176 patients who have recovered from the viral infection, 146 are from East Khasi Hills, 11 Ri Bhoi, 7 West Garo Hills, 5 East Jaintia Hills, 4 West Jaintia Hills and 3 West Khasi Hills.

So far, the state has detected a total of 18,927 COVID-19 cases out of which 2,466 are active cases, 16,262 recovered and 199 deaths.

With 1,492 active COVID-19 cases, East Khasi Hills, that includes state capital Shillong is the worst affected district in the state, followed by Ri Bhoi with 287 cases, 187 West Garo Hills, 106 in West Jaintia Hills, 105 West Khasi Hills, 104 East Jaintia Hills, 48 South Garo Hills, 44 East Garo Hills, 42 South West Garo Hills, 27 in North Garo Hills and 24 South West Khasi Hills.

On the other hand, of the 4,80,778 persons who have tested for COVID-19 in the state as on date, 4,61,851 were tested negative for the virus even as 581 persons are in institutional quarantine and 1,885 under home quarantine.

There are 1,16,347 entrants from outside the state.

26,377 healthcare workers had received the first dose of Covishield vaccine and 18,920 had received the second dose, while 51,868 frontline workers got the first shot of the vaccine and 25,469 got the second dose as on Friday.

Moreover, 1,86,198 persons from among the general public were vaccinated with the first dose and 21,835 were inoculated with the second dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 across the state.
