TURA, JULY 10: At least 100 youth from Meghalaya have completed their recruitment examination for the Indian Army and 62 of the youth are from five districts of insurgency hit Garo hills.

The selection drive was held at Tura on April 14 – 18 for the entire state. The written examination was held in June.

West Garo hills deputy commissioner Pravin Bakshi in a statement said, “It is with a sense of pride and satisfaction that we wish to inform that in the recruitment rally conducted by the Indian Army a total of 100 youth from Meghalaya have been finally selected after a grueling physical, medical and written examination.”

Bakshi informed that selected students have been asked to produce certificates and other relevant documents for joining. “The reason for cheer this time around is the fact that after a special invitation from chief minister Mukul Sangma, the recruitment rally was conducted at Tura instead of Shillong”, he added.

The recruitment rally is held at Shillong every six month. The last recruitment rally was held at Tura in 2012.

“The difference this time has been that an encouraging number of 62 selected candidates out of 100 are from militancy affected areas of Garo hills and most from worst affected rural areas of West Garo Hills, South West Garo Hills and North Garo Hills”, said Bakshi.

A total of 5000 candidates from across Meghalaya had participated in the recruitment drive. After initial screen, a total of 470 had cleared the physical and medical fitness test. A total of 329 took the written test for both Soldier General Duty (302) and Clerk (22) and out of which 100 have passed.

The results for Clerks are yet to be declared.

“The success rate from the written exam to final selection is about 33% in this recruitment whereas the average trend as per sources in the Army is 10-22%. The overall candidates participating in the run doubled than the average in this rally as per sources in Army which is a reason for jubilation in Garo hills and proves that youth of the region are fitter than in any other part of the country”, Bakshi explained.

Bakshi said that Army has hailed the enormously successful recruitment rally and have shared their observation that this would encourage more youth from the region to join the Indian Army and serve the nation.

Bakshi also informed that the selected candidates, who had completed their physical and medical fitness test, were trained for two weeks at Tura under the Chief Minister’s Career Guidance Scheme with free food and lodging.

“From GNLA bandh affected South West Garo Hills transport, lunch and accommodation in Tura was arranged by Chief Minister himself for the candidates severely affected due to the bandh”, Bakshi informed.

The elated deputy commissioner hoped that induction of 62 young and enterprising youth from Garo Hills to the Indian Army will inspire others to follow suit.

In the past rallies the trend was reverse with less candidates competing from Garo Hills, who could not make it to Shillong due to logistics and financial problems.
