64th years of signing of instrument of accession

Shillong, August 17: The 64th years of the signing of the instrument of accession between the twenty-five Khasi states and the union government was observed on Friday at the Youth Hostel.

It was on August 17, 1948 the twenty-five Khasi states and the Indian government signed the instrument of accession.  To mark its sixty-forth years of signing a solemn function was held which was attended by the Syiems, the Dollois who are the heads of states of the traditional administrative institutions of the Ri Hynniew Trep Land of  Khasi – Jaintia Hills.

The congregation was presided over by the spokesman of the Khasi Federated State,. John F. Kharshiiing. Leaders of the Khasi Students Unions,  Jaintia students Union and also representative of several social and women’s organization of the city were also present.

The congregation felt that  suitable constitutional amendments were necessary for having a clear cut definition of the powers and functions of the traditional institution, especially when the Panchayati Raj Act do not apply in Meghalaya, because  of the existence of Traditional  Commission for Scheduled Tribal.- By Our Reporter
