SHILLONG, JAN 24: Its has been a long, ardours but one of most fruitful journey for Dorbar Shnong Mawlai, Mawroh when it started off the human habitation way back in 1940s with only  24 houses without electricity supply, proper roads and drinking water. But 75 years down the line the locality has developed and grown with more than a 1000 households residing.

Celebrating its Platinum jubilee year, the Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh on Saturday organised a curtain raiser for the year long platinum jubilee celebration

Recalling the days of the yore, former Rangbah Shnong Tennyson Kharkongor narrated the sad state of affairs of the locality in those days stating that the people faced many difficulties from the water, roads to electricity supply.

“It was a tough journey for the dorbar shnong to ensure that its people are provided with the basic amenities besides pressurising the authority concerned to bring about development from establishing of a school to widening of the roads and improvising balance and fair governance,” Kharkongor said.

It may be mentioned that the Dorbar Shnong Mawlai Mawroh came into existence in 1940 with (Late) Besingh Lyngdoh Nongpiur as its Rangbah Shnong with only 24 households under his care. Interestingly, this locality has been adopting a democratic form of governance even before India’s independence in 1947 and the attainment of statehood in 1972.

Appreciating the achievements and contributions made by the forerunners of this locality, Meghalaya Information and Public Relation minister AL Hek said that the strength and vision of upholding real democracy by the leaders of this locality is an example worth replicating.

Calling upon the residents of the locality to uphold unity, Hek said “As the saying goes, Unity is strength, I believe that a unified and determined section of people can bring about a massive change to the society,” he said adding that if the first residents of this locality had not unified and stick together through various hurdles, “The identity of this locality would have been erased long time ago.”

Stressing on the same lines, Mawlai legislator, Embhah Syiemlieh praised the first residents for the courage and determination while saluting the leaders for their dedication and contribution. “The society now look up to the young people hoping that they would bring about a change that will sustain not only the present but the generations to come,” he added.

Highlighting the transformation of Mawroh from a small, under developed locality to one of the most sought after locality in Shillong, former secretary of the dorbar shnong P Lyndem recalled the times when the houses were lit with only a lantern, dusty and bumpy roads meant only for horse carts and a clean source of drinking water sufficient for all its residents.

“However, with time, the locality developed and occasion like the visit of the Pope to Shillong at Golflink in 1986 came as a blessing for the locality as roads were widened and properly constructed, followed by the construction of the VIP road which started from Mawroh till Umrynjah (Ri Bhoi),” Lyndem said adding that all these occurrence has helped raise the locality to new heights.

The gathering was also attended by Rangbah Shnong Peter G Lamare, Secretary HBR Lyngdoh Nongpiur, past and present executive members of the Dorbar, residents of the locality besides others.- By Our Reporter
