Two militants killed in Garo hills

Shillong, August 14: North and West Garo hills police gunned down the commander-in-chief Winstone and the area commander Rocky of the newly floated A’chik National United Force (ANUF) and arrested eight others that includes the militant outfit sympathizers.

The encounter took place at around 2.30 pm on Tuesday.

Police said that the ANUF indulged in the extorting and kidnapping of businessmen from North and West Garo Hills districts.

Police said the outfit had abducted one Abul Sheikh on August 2  and demanded Rs two crores from the family, but after bargaining Sheikh was released when the outfit was paid Rs. 2 lakhs.

Deny Marak, another leader of the outfit is said to have masterminded the kidnapping.  Police have launched a massive manhunt to apprehend him.

Police have recovered one AK- 81 and a revolver from the spot of the encounter.
On the eve of the Independence Day and the threat to disrupt the celebration by militant outfits, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had a marathon security review meeting with top State police officers Tuesday evening at the police headquarter.

Normally, security briefing to the chief minister is given by the police top brass in his office, but on Tuesday Sangma went to the police headquarter for the briefing.

Sangma’s visit to the police headquarter has raised eyebrows as it signifies that there was something very important that he had discussed with the police top brass. –By Our Reporter
