‘Abjure violence for talks’

SHILLONG, FEB 11: Meghalaya government on Thursday reiterated that  it is open to talks with militant outfit- including the GNLA and HNLC- but they must first abjure violence and desist from anti-national activities like calling bands during important national holidays. In a statement issued on Thursday, the state government said it would like to set the record straight and clarify besides abjuring the path of violence it must also stop all criminal activities such as extortions, kidnappings, killing of innocent civilians, etc.

The statement said these pre-conditions are necessary to ensure positive participation in any peace process by the state and central governments and create an atmosphere which would be conducive for appointment of interlocutor(s).

It is reiterated that the state government is keen to engage in dialogue with any militant group, including GNLA and HNLC, provided they come forward with sincerity of intention and willingness to firmly renounce such anti-national and anti-social acts.

The statement further said needless to say, the appointment of interlocutors to facilitate the peace process will be a natural corollary to the above conditions in the overall interest of maintaining peace and tranquillity in the state.

The state government once again appealed to all the militant groups in the state to respond positively and come forward with an open mind to join the main stream and take the peace process forward and thus ensure a normal, free and peaceful co-existence in the state.- By Our Reporter
