SHILLONG, SEPT 12: State’s chief secretary PBO Warjri today said Meghalaya may perhaps become the first state in the country with its State Data Centre on Cloud technology. He was stating this while referring to the recently launched ‘Digital India’ programme by Central government, which further aims to prepare India for a knowledge future.

The chief secretary was addressing at the inauguration function of a workshop for decision makers on IPv6 held at Yojana Bhawan Auditorium, Main Secretariat here on Friday.

He was also happy to note that the Information Technology Department has already completed the first round of Universal Digital Literacy programme, and planning for the second phase through the Rainbow Common Service Centres. He was happy to note that the Rainbow CSCs are doing well in the State as compared to the difficulties faced by them.

He stated that in order to encourage IT amongst students, the IT Department had already distributed free Tablet PCs to about 25000 class-12 students on 2nd Oct last year, and that the government is planning to go for it again this year.

Warjri in his address also mentioned that 70 acres of land have been allotted by the State government for setting up of IT Park at New Shillong Townshil, wherein adequate space for BPOs will be available. He said that more such workshops should be conducted in order to increase awareness in various fields.

Organized by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Ministry of Communications & IT (MCIT), Govt of India and the Information Technology Department, Govt of Meghalaya, the workshop was attended by about 150 officials from various departments of the State government.

The objective of the Workshop was to create awareness amongst the State govt officers, State Government Organizations on Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) which will enables them for making suitable plan for smooth transition of their network from Internet Protocol (IPv4) to Next Generation Internet Protocol (IPv6).

This is essential in view of the exponential increase in devices connecting to the Internet, including computers, mobile Tablets, mobile phones, data cards, latest gadgets, which requires more number of IP addresses.

Earlier, Commissioner and Secretary in charge Information Technology department DP Wahlang in his address informed that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), under Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, Govt of India, has been given the mandate for up-gradation of IPv4 to IPv6. The migration was initially targeted to be completed by March’2012, but could be achieved.

Citing the analogy of landline telephone numbers, which were of 4 digits during the 1980s, with the increase of land-lines, he said the digits had to be increased to 7 digits to cater to more land-line phones with unique numbers.

Similarly, with the exponential increase in internet devices, the limited IPv4 addresses will soon exhaust, and no more addresses would be available for devices to join the Internet to communicate. This will result in clogging, he said.

Wahlang added, and with IPv4 not being inter-operable with IPv6, there is a need to migrate to IPv6 so that we are connected to the internet. Wahlang hoped that the IPv6 workshop for Decision makers will be successful in achieving its objectives.

The workshop covered several important topics related to IPv6 including migration plan, security issues, capacity building, IPv6 addressing scheme, government policies & readiness, transition technologies, and related aspects.- By Our Reporter
