Acid classified as poison

SHILLONG, OCT 3: Cabinet on Thursday approved the ‘Poison Amendment Bill, 2013’ to regulate the sale and storage of acid. Chief minister Mukul Sangma informed, “We have approved the Poison Amendment Bill, 2013 which in compliance with the Supreme Court ruling.”

According to Sangma, the Supreme Court in its ruling has issue directives to all the states and union territories on the need to frame rules on the sale and storage of various forms of acid products.

Sangma said, “The exercise is to regulate the sale and storage of acid in the state.”  He informed this will require sellers to determine their stock and declare their stocks within 15 days after the declaration and added it will also require for the sellers to maintain register to keep record of people buying acid from them.”

Sangma also said all institutions, laboratories and others will also be covered and directed to comply with the provisions laid down in the proposed act.”

The bill will ensure that people who have criminal minds to use acid to harm others can be prevented to a great extent. It will act as a deterrent,” Sangma added. There have been many instances of acid being misused for criminal purposes like throwing the liquid substance on the faces mauling them for life.- By Our Reporter
