Shillong, Feb 6: Three companies of CRPF will be arriving on Monday to augment the existing security in Garo hills fighting militancy. As the killings and kidnappings incident in the militancy prone Garo hills seem to be increasing, the state government had requested for additional four companies of paramilitary forces to be deployed in the militants infested areas of the state.

A high home department official said that one company of the CRPF had already arrived and has been deployed in Shallang areas of West Khasi hills district to fight militancy. He informed this website on Thursday that the remaining three companies of CRPF will be arriving on Monday and will immediately deploy to Garo hills.

The official also revealed that the state government has decided to have a permanent security camp across the Simsang river in East Gao hills district. He said, “Depending on the availability of forces, we intend to keep one company of the CRPF along with the state SWAT commandos to neutralise the GNLA and other militant groups operating from that area.

Informing that the state government is still waiting for a response from the GNLA on the open invitation by the chief minister and the governor for a dialogue, he however said that security will be strengthened in Garo hills as part of the government’s effort to neutralise the militants operating in these areas.

Even as the official said that the state government is intensifying operation against the militants in Garo hills, he however informed, “ The state government is waiting for a response from the GNLA on the open invitation of dialogue by the chief minister and government.”

The official said that the response from the GNLA has to come before the final settlement of peace agreement between the state, union governments and the ANVC.- By Our Reporter
