SHILLONG, MAR 29: Adhoc employees of PWD on Tuesday staged a protest demanding the state government to consider reinstating their services in the department.

Armed with placards, the employees under the banner of All Meghalaya Officiating Employees PWD Roads and Building Association (AMOEPRBA) were seen demonstrating at the parking lot near the Additional Secretariat.

They have also sought immediate intervention of the Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan into their demand.

According to them, the sudden decision of the state government to discontinue their services is unacceptable and uncalled as most of them have served for three decades in the department.

Over hundreds of adhoc employees mainly from Khasi and Jaintia Hills region have been affected by the recent decision of the state government, which had even issued a standing order to stop the culture of adhoc appointments.

“We demand the state government to find out ways and means to reinstate our services in the department,” association general secretary David Rapmai told reporters.

He also lamented that the voice of aggrieved employees was not heard despite several requests being made to the government through the different ministers including PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar and officials.

Rapmai however said if the state government failed to pay heed to the request of the employees, the association would be compelled to intensify its agitations till the demand is achieved.

“We will not stop but we will continue to pressurize the government till it is willing to turn towards our grievances and address them,” he said.

According to him, the sudden termination has affected the employees especially those who are single earners and whose family totally dependent on them.

In view of this, Rapmai said that the association had also sought an appointment with the Meghalaya Governor to seek his intervention into the matter. “We hope that we would soon get to meet him (governor) to apprise him of our grievances,” he said.

He informed that the association have scheduled an appointment with the Meghalaya Governor and are expecting to meet him in the coming days to discuss on the issues faced by them.-By Our Reporter
