Adhoc teachers protest to continue in front of secretariat

SHILLONG, JUNE 29: Adhoc school teachers under the banner of the Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) on Wednesday decided to continue with their indefinite protest in front of the secretariat till the state government is ready to implement their demands.

The decision was taken after the teachers were not satisfied with the assurance given by the Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui during a meeting held today.

FASTOM spokesperson Mayborn Lyngdoh told reporters that Rymbui has reassured the delegation that the government is considering the demands of the teachers.

“He (Rymbui) however expressed that the government needed more time due to some technical glitch but we requested them to take us into consideration so that we can help to resolve the matter,” he said.

Over 8,000 adhoc teachers have been demanding Rs 18,000 salary enhancement and an annual increment of 5 percent.

Lyngdoh said the teachers have decided to continue with the protest till the government is ready to fulfill their demands.

“Until and unless the government gives us the order we will not move from here,” he added.

When asked, Lyngdoh said over 2,000 teachers have so participated in the protest, which began on Tuesday after the state government failed to take any decision on the matter even after three sittings of the cabinet.

He said similarly, teachers in Garo Hills are also staging an indefinite day and night protest in front of the mini secretariat at Tura.
