SHILLONG, SEPT 12: The opposition on Monday moved a no-confidence motion against the ruling Congress led MUA-II coalition government for its alleged failure on various issues specifying lack of protection for women and children as one of the issues.

The NC was submitted jointly by the Meghalaya People’s Front (MPF), which comprises of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and National People’s Party (NPP) and Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP).

Meghalaya assembly speaker Abu Taher Mondal informed that the house will take up the NC on Wednesday for discussion.

Speaking to reporters, the NPP legislator James K Sangma said, “We have decided to also move NC against the government because the general mood of the people today in the state is that this government has failed its citizens completely.”

“As public representatives we feel it is our duty to take this feeling and bring it to the assembly in the most appropriate and strong form of dissatisfaction,” he added.

Earlier, the opposition had also moved a resolution seeking the removal of the Speaker, which will be taken up for discussion during the last day of the session on September 16.

Stating that the government is collectively responsible for law and order, Sangma said, “Everyday we read on how crimes against women are on the rise which simply means the government is not competent to handle situation of law and order,” adding “It has failed in its duty to protect its citizens especially women and children.”

The opposition has also lambasted the state government for failing to own-up responsibility for failure in the management of the state’s economy which has gone from bad to worst.

According to Sangma, the state government is responsible for this by way of acts of commission and omission.

Sangma also added that when the government fails to take responsibility for its failure, the opposition has to tell them in the strongest possible way– ‘take the responsibility for it and admit there is a lot of problems’.

When asked, Sangma however refused to give a direct reply on the alleged support extended by the dissidents within the ruling Congress. “I don’t known if there is any dissidence but we as oppositions are raising the voice of the people in the floor of the house,” he claimed.-By Our Reporter
