Agnes arrested, ngos swarm district court

SHILLONG, MAR 26 : Civil Society Women Organization (CSWO) president and RTI activist Agnes Kharshiing was arrested by the police on Tuesday morning at around 6 am from her residence at Laitumkhrah.

The arrest was made on the basis of a police complaint filed by the Meghalaya Secretariat Administrative Department (SAD) deputy secretary E Lyngdoh with the Sardar police station against Kharshiing for forcibly entering the main secretariat along with two other women without proper authorization. The complaint was filed on March 20.

Kharshiing was booked under section 353, 447 and 180 of Indian Panel Code.

According to the police complaint Kharshiing forcibly tried to enter the main secretariat last Wednesday accompanied by the two women. The secretariat staff and the police guarding the entrance tried to stop her, but she forced her way inside the secretariat along with her two companions saying that they were going to the media room.

Later in the evening the SAD department decided to lodge a police complaint against Kharshiing. It is also alleged that Kharshiing also abused the police on duty at the secretariat entrance.

After her arrest Kharshiing was produce before the district court. However till the filing of this report detail of her arrest status is still awaited.

By late afternoon members of ngos were seen in the premises of the district court waiting if the court’s will grant her bail or not.- By Our Reporter
