AITC to keep a watch on HNLC peace talks

SHILLONG, AUG 18: The opposition All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has decided to keep a watch on the on-going process for peace talks between the government and the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC).

 

“How this whole exercise will unfold and how this whole discussion will ultimately be or somehow negotiated by them by both the parties rather here not both, it’s a tripartite discussion, will have to be watched,” Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma told reporters on Thursday.

 

Sangma said, “We will have to look at how the modalities are adopted by the state government.

They will also take cognizance of the sentiments of the people, the government will always be sensitive to all the concerns.”

 

He said members of the proscribed organization must also be committed for peace and sincerity to restore peace and sustained it.

 

“That must be the first indication of the will and determination and I have reasons to believe that all the members belonging to different proscribed organizations must always whenever they indicate any intention to engage in this kind of dialogue, the dialogue must be a well-intended dialogue to achieve do ultimate goal of restoring peace,” he said.

 

The former chief minister said that there many ways of engaging with so-called militant outfits, with notified and banned outfits and proscribed organizations.

 

He said the exercise or modality adopted by the government should not create a situation where people tend to think that okay by joining militancy or floating organizations, people can ultimately get away even after committing crimes.

 

“When we embarked upon this whole exercise the comprehensive multi-pronged approach that was adopted by the then government the intent was to restore peace, which can be sustained.Therefore we have been abundantly clear in ensuring that okay all those crimes committed as per records which were available with the law enforcing agencies,” he said.

 

He continued, “If there is any heinous crime committed by any of the members of the organization, then we will not have any kind of so-called writing of those cases or withdrawing such cases in respect of heinous crimes committed, which are well defined, which we’re particularly meant for any instances of killing. Rest we decided the government will withdraw to ensure that okay the honest intent of all the members who belong to these different organizations are able to really assimilate themselves with our national mainstream capable competent contributor for the overall growth and prosperity of the community and the state and the nation as a whole.”
