TURA, MAY  2: Meghalaya police gun downed commander-in-chief of A’chik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF) Jack Marak in a counter insurgency operation at a village in North Garo Hills on Saturday.

The Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) commandos stormed the hideout of the outfit at Mandadrop village under Kharkutta police outpost around 6:30 am. The exchange of fire lasted for several minutes and Jack Marak was killed.

Police said that around eight cadres of the outfit were sheltered at the camp during the operation. Operation is on to nap the cadres, who have managed to escape.

Police has recovered one AK-47 with two magazine, 49 live rounds of 7.62 pistol, one 9 mm pistol with one magazine, four live rounds of 9 mm, one magazine of 7.62 pistol with two live rounds, 14 electric detonators, four meter fuse wire, eight piece of gelatin sticks, demand notes, diaries and number of mobile SIM cards.

Jack Marak, a former militant of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and ASAK had joined AMEF last year. Jack, a wanted criminal was instrumental in the abduction of a Block Development Office in 2011. In 2014, he was involved in the abduction of an SBI cashier along with ASAK cadres.

In February last, Jack had a narrow escape when police stormed a hideout of the outfit at Bolda Abri village in North Garo Hills.- From Our Correspondent
