SHILLONG, DEC 6: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma on Tuesday said that he was shocked and saddened at the demise of Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalitaa, popular known as Amma, who had pioneered the pro-poor programmes.

“I’m deeply saddened at the demise of Jayalalithaa ji. Her death leaves a deep void not only in her state but also in the nation as well,” Sangma said in a statement.

Jayalalithaa, passed away on Monday night at her home state in a hospital after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She was admitted in a hospital on September 22 with complaints of fever and dehydration and suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday evening.

On Monday, Jayalalithaa continued to be very critical and was on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and life support systems. And the end came at 11.30pm.

The leader to many Tamils and ‘Amma’ to millions, Jayalalithaa died after undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai for 75 days. She was 68.

Sangma in a statement said she will always be remembered for the numerous poverty alleviation initiatives pioneered by her to provide a better and more meaningful life to the people especially the less fortunate.

He said many such initiatives have been replicated by governments both in the centre and other states as well and conveyed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family members especially the people of Tamil Nadu.
