ANCA ultras arrested

TURA, AUG 17: The Assam police on Saturday arrested two militants allegedly belonging to Achik National Cooperative Army (ANCA) from near Agia. The militants have been identified as William S Sangma and Jiten Lyandoh. They were arrested along with a woman.

According to reports, Sangma had been in hiding in Assam after the Meghalaya  police intensified operations. He had supposedly gone to Shillong and then escaped after two of the group, one was his brother, were arrested from a night bus in Mawiong.

Both were taken for interrogation and police sources revealed that the two had confessed to be part of the gang which waylaid the policeman, Battalion constable Abhijit Mazumdar and his companion  Saumendu Chakraborty. The duo revealed that they were members of the recently formed group ‘Achik  National Cooperative Army (ANCA).

The gang had been terrorising residents of the Tura region along the Tura – Dalu road and may have been responsible for most of the kidnappings that took place over the past two months.

The ANCA chief had been involved in a number of kidnappings and most famously, the botched up  attempt of kidnapping  a police personnel Abhijit Mazumdar and his friend Soumendu Chakraborty. Mazumdar had suffered multiple gun shots and was shifted to Guwahati for treatment, where he is recuperating.

The West Garo hills police team had even identified the vehicle and made  few arrests based on  information provided by sources. Interrogation of the arrested duo is currently on by the Assam police after which they will be handed over to Meghalaya  police.- By Our Correspondent
