SHILLONG, FEB 26: In a major breakthrough, the commander-in-chief of a newly floated militant outfit in Garo hills, the Achik National Liberation Central Army (ANLCA) and his aide were arrested along with huge cache of arms and ammunition by the police from a village in East Garo Hills district on Wednesday morning.
The C-in-C has been identified as Sengpan Marak of Pakkregre, Rongjeng and the other cadre as Grewingston Marak of Chisim Matchokgre, under North Garo hills district.
The two ANLCA members were travelling with arms to carry out extortions and kidnappings when the district police along with SWAT commandos conducted an operation and intercepted one public transport sumo at Songsak village, district SP JFK Marak said.
Marak said that on frisking the two suspected militants in the Sumo, police found one 7.65mm pistol along with two magazines and 35 rounds from Grewingston Marak, and a bundle containing 68 live rounds of 7.62 AK- rifle ammunition was recovered from Sengpan Marak.
Further search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a plastic bag containing one AK-47 rifle with one magazine wrapped in a blanket along with other incriminating documents, Marak informed.
During interrogation, Marak informed, Sengpan Marak revealed that he was one of the Commander in Chief of the outfit, who was responsible for kidnapping the Nokma from Songsak Bonegre on January 23.
Sengpan was also involved in executing several kidnappings and extortions in Songsak and Rongjeng area in East Garo Hills and Dainadubi, Bajengdoba areas under North Garo Hills District, Marak revealed.
Marak informed that under Sengpan’s specific instructions the brother of Weston Marak (he deserted the party with 11.5 lakhs) Bithnat Marak was shot in cold blood in Upper Rongbu on February 1, following the kidnapping and release of the former’s father in the beginning of the year.
The senior police officer also informed that Marak has been terrorizing the people of Songsak, Rongjeng and Dainadubi areas for quite some time now.- By Our Reporter
