SHILLONG, DEC 6: Minister for Civil Defence and Home Guards Metbah Lyngdoh today attended the 56th Annual Day Celebration of Civil Defence and Home Guards in the presence of Director General, Civil Defence and Home Guards, Meghalaya, Shillong R P Agarwal, other distinguished dignitaries and Officers of the department held at Aglanggre Playground, Tura.

The Minister then took the general salute and inspected the parade contingents along with the parade Commander.

Speaking on the occasion, Lyngdoh congratulated the recipients of the Awards for their meritorious services and performance in line with their duty and added that this would also be an inspiration for others to discharge their duties diligently. Emphasizing on the significant role played by the department for assisting in any kind of emergency and also whenever calamities, both natural and manmade take place in the region, he said that the spirit of service is of the highest order. Further, he stated that the department provides help to the state police and civil administration in maintenance of law and order, in meeting security requirements of many central and state Government departments and private sector undertakings.

The Minister asserted that they also serve the society by imparting training to the Home Guard volunteers and conducting various training courses on Civil Defence subjects including disaster management. Moreover, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) drawn from the personnel of Civil Defence & Home Guards trained by the NDRF have exclusively been devoted to the task of disaster management and have done a commendable job in conducting rescue operations at Garo Hills during floods and landslides etc, he added.

Agarwal while addressing the gathering congratulated the Awardees for their dedicated and commendable service to the people of the region. He also lauded them for providing assistance during emergencies and also for saving the lives of people in times of disaster. He further informed that many Home Guard personnel have been deployed during the Assembly elections this year and added that the department aims make the Central Training Institute, Shillong as a model institute in the region.

The Chief Guest also presented the Medals and Certificates to the Awardees of President Home Guards and Civil Defence, Director General Disc and Commendation Certificate, New Delhi and Director General Civil Defence and Home Guards Commendation Certificate, Meghalaya.

Awardees of Director General, Civil Defence’s DISC and Commendation Certificate, New Delhi 2017 are Newstarland Wanniang, Bansley Sohpoh, Min Kumar Pradhan, Sunil Pegu, Pherson Ranee and Muhammad Faruk Hussain.

The Awardees of Director General Civil Defence and Home Guards Commendation Certificate, 2018 are Lumsing Kharbangar, Brondith D Sangma, Richard K Sangma, Nohush Ch Hajong, Ajay Kumar Basumatary, Rajesh G Momin, Karnesh A Sangma, Heb Tariang, Filter Langi, Bhuben Barman, Gyanchand Pandit, Dibinson Pyngrope, Pynhunlang Shabong and Reganson Kharlor.

The parade contingents from Border Wing Home Guards Battalion (BWHGB), Shillong displayed the unison March Drill followed with a display by Brass Band Party led by Commander Surjo Kanta, Hawaldar, BWHGB and Pipe Band Party led by Commander Rockstar Mynsong, Hawaldar, Central Training Institute, Mawdiangdiang, Shillong and Civil Defence Mock Drill on Disaster Management, etc. The Parade Contingents was led by Parade Commander, Benalbic Warjri, District Commander and incharge Deputy Controller, Jowai.

Earlier, the Joint Director, Civil Defence and Joint Commandant General of Home Guards, Meghalaya Shillong Merinpole K Sangma welcomed the gathering while Deputy Controller of Civil Defence, Tura Mainora M Sangma proposed the vote of thanks.
