SHILLONG, JAN 2: As part of the nationwide “Chaurahe Pe Charcha”, the Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) on Monday demanded a “white paper’ on five questions and demands put before the NDA led central government to expose the truth behind the demonetization drive against black money. The MPYC will also be organizing various programs across the state against the NDA government.
“The Congress party demands a ‘white paper’ to expose the truth behind demonetization based on five questions and five demands to the NDA led government at the centre,” MPYC president Richard Marak said in a statement on Monday.
He said that the centre should come out clear as to how much black money it has unearthed since 8th November, 2016 besides the economic loss to the nation on account of demonetization and how many jobs and livelihoods have been lost since this policy has been announced.
How many lives have been lost due to demonetization, why has the government not paid any compensation to the families of the deceased, he questioned.
He also wanted to know the process of consultation and preparedness followed prior to the implementation of demonetization and queried as to why experts, economists or the RBI were not consulted before unleashing this draconian policy upon the people
The Congress also wanted to know whether the government placed the names of all persons, institutions, and entities that deposited Rs. 25 lakh or more in bank accounts in the six months preceding the November 8, 2016.
The Congress further demanded that the centre ensures all restrictions on withdrawal of money be lifted with immediate effect.
“Till the time these restrictions are in place, a special interest at the rate of 18% per annum should be given to all bank account holders. We demand that all charges on digital transactions should be abolished forthwith,” Marak said.
He said that the rate of rations distributed under the PDS system should be halved for the period of a year under the provisions of the Food Security Act adding in addition, a special one-time bonus of 20% should be provided over and above the MSP of all Rabi crops.
He also demanded that Rs. 25,000 should be deposited in the account of at least one woman belonging to each BPL family as compensation for the suffering caused to women due to demonetization.
“The number of guaranteed work days and the wage rate under MGNREGA should be doubled for a period of one year. The government should organise a special drive to identify and register all those who have lost their jobs since November 8, 2016, and provide them compensation at the applicable minimum wage rate for a time period extending up to 31st March, 2017,” he said.
Stating that an Income tax and sales tax rebate of 50% should be given to small shopkeepers and businesses, he said that the central government should compensate the state governments for the loss of revenue incurred on account of this exemption.
