ANVC (B) denies jail attack

SHILLONG, FEB 4: Denying the accusation that the group was behind the jail attack that killed two jail employees, the Achik National Volunteer Council (ANVC – B) condemned the recent attacked and claim that the outfit name has been dragged by some vested interests.

In a statement issued on Monday, the ANVC(B) Rimpu N Marak said Williamnagar is GNLA C-i-C Sohan D Shira’s strong hold and its influence in that area is not much, so accusing ANVC(B) seems more like a cover up statement to target its cadres and to derail the peaceful initiative.

Marak said that ANVC(B) member Norok and others who were arrested for disrupting Deborah Marak meeting and threatening her have got bail after following due legal process and therefore their involvement in the attack is not possible since they are on the way to meet ANVC(B) commander-in-chief and have not assume command yet.

Marak said that the ANVC(B) who were arrested and release had been tortured and threatened while they were in custody, however, they do not pose any threat to anybody now.

Marak also said, “We are cooperating with the government and are following legal procedure to bail out our cadres who still have to attend court so the accusation
has to be carefully examined otherwise cadres may feel threatened and worse situation may arise.”

Marak also claims that some jail officers had made personal remarks against the ANVC(B) cadres when they were in jail and said there is an apprehension among them that they would be arrested on slightest pretext.
Marak also underscored the ANVC (B) effort of trying to bridge understanding with other communities of the state and dragging its name without evidence will jeopardize the entire process. The ANVC (B) also welcome Meghalaya DGP Kulbir Kishan’s statement to institute an in depth inquiry into the jail attack before coming to any sort of conclusion.- By Our Reporter
