ANVC (B) kills GNLA militant, injures two in a gun-battle

SHILLONG, DEC 20: A Garo National Liberation Council (GNLA) militant was killed and two of his colleagues were injured in a gun-battle with another Garo hills based militant outfit A’chik National Volunteers Council (ANVC-B) Thursday evening at Rongtok village across the Simsang river bordering West Khasi hills district.

Police said that the gun-battle between the two militant outfits lasted for about half hour and both the sides who were equipped with sophisticated arms exchange heavy fire.

The incident took place when the ANVC (B) militants somehow came to know that the GNLA militants were taking shelter in a house at the Rongtok village. The ANVC(B) militants approached the house but were greeted with heavy fire by the GNLA militants taking shelter in that house.

The villagers told the police that the gun battle between the two militant outfits lasted for almost half hour. In the shooting one of the GNLA militants was killed while two others sustained bullet injuries.

Police informed that the body of the GNLA militant who died in the gun battle was still in the house that belongs to Banthang, who police suspects give refuge to the GNLA militants whenever they come to that part of Garo hills.

Police also informed that the two inured militants have been carried away by the GNLA colleagues to  Rongram.village.

As soon as police were informed about the gun battle between the two militant groups , commandos of the  Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) rushed to the village and are conducting operation to nab the GNLA and ANVC(B) militants. As of now police are still trying to ascertain how many militants were there from both the militant outfits.

There have been a battle of one-upmanship between the GNLA and ANVC(B) in the Garo hills parts of Meghalaya. Both the militant groups are well trained and heavily armed giving the security forces and the district administrations of all the Garo hills district really hard time to maintain law and order.- By Our Reporter
