Appoint IAS as DC:Ngos

TURA, AUG 27: Several ngos in South Garo hills on Wednesday demanded appointment of an IAS officer as the deputy commissioner of the district or else they threatened to launch an indefinite strike if government fails to fulfill their demand.

“We urge the government to immediately appoint an IAS officer as the deputy commissioner of the district”, said Sengraph Sangma, an activist of Joint Action Committee (JAC).

Two months ago, the then deputy commissioner of the district, Chinmoy Gotmare was transferred out, who now holds the charge of Director, Higher and Technical Education in Shillong.

Gotmare was attacked by militants on two occasions.

The district is presently headed by a Meghalaya civil Service cadre TG Momin as its acting deputy commissioner.

The ngos feel that in absence of an IAS officer in the district, the implementation of various development activities have taken a back seat.  “All the departments are not performing in the district.  The irrigation, horticulture, electricity cooperation have literally stopped functioning”, said Thengrak Sangma, another JAC activist.

The ngos have also sought action against erring officers, who fail to attend to their duties. The activists came down heavily on power minister Clement Marak for the erratic power supply in the district.  “The minister has to resign if he cannot live up to the expectation of the people”, said Sangma.

On Monday and Tuesday, the ngos had called for a strike.- From Our Correspondent
