Arms smugglers arrested, wireless seized

wireless setsShillong, December 1: Six high frequency wireless sets meant to be delivered to the Garo hills based militant outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) were seized from five arms smugglers , including a former Nagaland police official, by the Ri Bhoi police on Saturday night.

Ri Bhoi district SP CVS Reddy informed that the arrest and the seizure of the wireless sets were made after the police got intelligence input. Based on the information provided to the them, the police raided the hideout of the arms smugglers  at Maikhuli area bordering Assam’s Kamrup district.

The police seized China-made TYT TH-F8 wireless sets smuggled from Myanmar and meant to be delivered by the smugglers to the GNLA finance secretary Rakkam D. Shira.

Police also arrested a former Nagaland police officer sub inspector Robert Sangma and Moya Khohung from Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district. After his retirement Sangma works as a security commander at CMJ Breweries located at Byrnihat.

Based on the information provided by the two arrested smugglers, the police raided their hideout at Maikhuli and recovered the wireless handsets and also arrested Zamthoson Haokip, Suntak Prem Baite and Ramzan Khubang. Police described the arrest as a major breakthrough as all the five were supplying arms and ammunition to the GNLA.

The police are now working to find out the main suppliers and their links with rebel groups in the northeastern states.- By Our Reporter
