Arrested for rape, police officer escapes

copSHILLONG, JUNE 2: Arrested and curiously kept in Tura police reserve for allegedly molesting and raping two sisters who are minors in South West Garo hills district, forty-eight year old Nurul Islam, who was an officer in charge of the Ampati police station, escaped early on Sunday morning giving the slip to his colleagues.

South West Garo hill deputy commissioner R Singh told this reporter that the Islam was arrested and suspended from service on Saturday evening after an FIR was registered against him but he managed to escape o Sunday morning.

The escape of Islam has drawn sharp criticism with the CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing demanding that all police personnel who must have helped the accused escape from a police reserve must be booked and charged for abetting rape and molestation.

The 48 year-old accused allegedly molested and raped the two sisters not once but twice – once on March 13 in his room at the police station and on March 31 when the eldest of the two sisters was home alone.

Moreover eyebrows have been raised as to why Islam who at around 1:30 AM was take to the police reserve in Tura instead of a police station.

Singh has directed a magisterial inquiry into the lapses which led to the escape of the accused and the additional district magistrate M P Sangma has been given one week’s time to compile and submit a detailed report of the whole incident.

Quoting the FIR lodged by the father of the two minor girls, Singh informed that the accused first committed the crime when he picked the two minor girls while they were on the way to the market at around 7 PM on March 13.

The minors who are studying in class VIII and class V were allegedly interrogated one after the other on that fateful day during which the officer molested and raped them in that very police station.

Taking advantage of the family’s poor background, Islam went to the house of the victims again on March 31 and raped the eldest sister.

According to Singh the rogue police officer not only raped the two sisters but also threatened them with dire consequences if they dared to inform their parents.

The victims family was provided with Rs 50,000 as compensation under a special scheme for rape victims in the state, but the incident has outrage the society at large. – By Our Reporter

The DSP Binoy Chettri has helped and abetted and should be arrested. Why did he have this accused transferred and why escorted by a junior. It is a known procedure that a senior officer is to make the arrest of an OC and the IO should also be someone senior. Why he asked a Junior SI who is not even the IO (Investigating Officer) of the case to transfer and take the accused to TURA and why did the ADM and another magistrate allow that. .This shows that they had planned to help the accused child rapist to escape and put the blame on the junior SI, who had dared to question them as to why he had to be shifted. An FIR will be filed against the DSP and the DC must act judiciously and if not then we can presume that this Narul Islam is getting protection.
