SHILLONG, NOV 1: Agitations and frequent bandhs have adversely affected government projects and so the construction of slaughter house at Mawlai also is suffering the same fate. Meghalaya animal & husbandry minister Deborah C Marak admitted that the construction of the slaughter house has been affected because of the series of agitations in the state.
Marak informed that most of the labourers who were working in the project left the state due to the ongoing agitations affecting the slaughter house construction. Â Â Though the progress of the project is stalled, the government has set a target of March 2014 as the deadline for completion of the project.
Marak revealed that seventy percent work of the project is completed and now minor works including construction of boundary walls and approach roads besides few other works is still left. The total cost of the project is Rs 22.83 crore and the slaughter house would produce hygienic meat to the people of the state.
Marak also refuted the perceptions that the slaughter house would be polluted by the presence of dumping ground just opposite to the slaughter house. Â She responded that the slaughter house will not be harmful to people of nearby localities and the government is taking care of perceived pollution or any health hazards.
The earlier deadline for completion of the project was December 2012 but there is no possibility that the project could be completed and so the fresh deadline is March 2014.
The abattoir would have a capacity of slaughtering 160 large animals, 240 pigs and 240 small animals (goats) per day. – By Our Reporter
