Land encroached by Assam

SHILLONG, APR 17: In an alleged encroachment, a lady MDC of the Karbi-Anglong Autonomous Council recently inspected a plot of land located in a village under West Jaintia hills district for construction of an Assam police outpost even as Pnar villagers expressed reservation to the proposed move.

“A lady MDC of the Karbi-Anglong Autonomous Council had conducted an inspection in a plot of land measuring around 3000-4000 sq ft owned by a pnar villager for the proposed setting up of an Assam police outpost,” sources from the village said.

The land, which the Assam is proposing to set up the police outpost, is located at Khatkhasla village, about 6 km from Sahsniang under Raliang police outpost in West Jaintia hills district.

Confirming the land encroachment allegation, Pangam Raliang Border Development Committee (PRBDC) assistant secretary Founderson Syngkon said that the family of the land owner has strongly objected to the attempt by Assam to forcefully take away their land.

According to Syngkon, there was no police official from the Meghalaya side when the inspection took place in the presence of the Assam MDC.  He said, another reason for protesting the proposed construction of the police outpost is that it is also located at the end of the Kurelia Bridge constructed by the Meghalaya government over Myntang River. He said it clearly indicates that the area is within Meghalaya territory.

Syngkon informed that the dorbar shnong of Khatkhasla is also using seal for all documents that they are part of West Jaintia Hills District. He said that the Assam authority has forcefully cleared the land with excavator for construction of the police outpost.

Khatkhasla is also a village which connect several Pnar dominated villages like Moolber, Psiar and others falling under Block I along the disputed inter-state border with Assam.

When enquired whether they would take up the matter with the Meghalaya government, Syngkon informed that the committee has recently sought action from the state home minister Roshan Warjri and requested for  setting up of a police outpost at Moolber village. He said  they are waiting for the response.

Syngkon made it clear that if the Assam government decided to move ahead and construct the police outpost, villagers from the different villages along with the committee would be compelled to launch a massive agitational programme.- By Our Reporter
