ASWA worried of Edu policy

SHILLONG, JUNE 11: The Achik Students Welfare Association (ASWA) on Thursday said the state government’s decision to adopt the ‘new education policy’ has deprived thousands of aspiring students in Garo hills region from pursuing their bachelor degree.

“Since there are very limited institutions in Garo Hills, the new policy has created an obstacle for the students of the region to pursue Bachelor Degree,” ASWA president Dikki N Marak said in a statement on Thursday.

According to him, as per the new regulations of the ‘semester system’ given by the NEHU, its affiliated colleges can only offer 50 students admission in a department.

“But there are only few departments available in the colleges of Garo Hills, leaving behind thousands of aspiring students,” he said adding “The students’ community is deeply saddened since thousands of students are yet to get admissions till date.”

Condemning the state government’s failure to provide enough opportunity for students to pursue their Bachelor degree in the region, Marak said, “The government should have made all the required preparations before such policy is strictly implemented or else the government should have postponed for some more years and make all the preparations.”

He is also of the opinion there may not be problems in the other parts of the state with the implementation of such education policy because of availability of sufficient institutions but such is not the case with Garo Hills region, which is having limited educational institutions.

Looking at the economic status of Garo hills, where huge chunk of families falls under BPL category, he said, “Therefore such families cannot afford to send their children to other parts of the state and the country to pursue education.”

Asserting that education is one such agency that can bring change to Garo hills region, Marak, however, said, “But the new education system brings to our mind that the consequences will create huge number of drop outs which are the main causes of many social evils in the region.”

Therefore, he said, the state government must make all the required preparations before such education policy is implemented.

The ASWA also suggested that since the new education policy is under process, the state government is demanded to introduce ‘morning and evening’ shift classes for Bachelor Degree in all the colleges in the region.

To prevent more problems from arising for the students of Garo hills in future, he said, “We urge the government to take immediate steps to upgrade infrastructure, faculty members, ministerial staffs and all the necessary in all the government institution of Garo Hills.

Further, ASWA also demanded that all the vacant posts in education department like appointment of principal and vice principal in the Govt Higher Secondary Schools of Garo hills, appointment of Additional Director of School Education and Literacy and the Higher and Technical Education at Tura should be immediately filled up.- By Our Reporter
