Bandh :Enigmatic response

SHILLONG, OCT 21: The response to the 36-hour HNLC bandh was enigmatic as the state, central government offices, banks, educational institutions and business establishment remained close on Monday but interestingly people were seen in large number at Khyndailad –Police Bazaar- who either came to participate or  witness the  public platform meeting “Enough” organized by the Informed Conscious And Responsible Existence (ICARE) and followed by musical concert to protest against the bandh culture in the state.

However normal life came to a grinding halt because of the HNLC bandh which was called to protest against the visit of President Pranab Mukherjee saying that October 21 is observed as the 25th death anniversary of Wickliffe Syiem, founder of Hynniewtrep nationalism and the planned visit of Mukherjee is a political insult to Hynniewtrep National Day.

However people were seen waiting in different areas of Shillong to greet Mukherjee on his maiden visit to the state.

All the commercial establishments in the city remained closed on the first day of the 36 hours bandh which started at 6 am on Monday and the road was almost empty as only few private and government public  buses apart from security personnel were seen plying on the road.

The worst affected by the bandh was the government  sector as the functioning of all the government offices were paralysed because the government officials, except from the higher ranks, did not come to work.

Officials said that the attendance in the government offices in the district was quite low though the district administration had arranged for buses to ply government employees to work.

Commercial as well as educational institutions remained closed on the first day of the bandh affecting the students and business community. Heavy security were seen in all the important junctions of the city to ensure nothing untoward happens during the President’s visit.- By Our Reporter
