Bandh:Police promise peace & security

bandSHILLONG, AUG 30: On the backdrop of the twelve hours bandh on Monday called given by ngos to put pressure on the Meghalaya government to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) after dialogue with the government failed, the East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang has assured that the police will do its best to maintain law and order in the district.

After the talk between the ngos and state chief minister Mukul Sangma failed on Thursday to resolve the demand made by the ngos led by the Khasi Students Union (KSU), FKJGP and others for implementation of the ILP in Meghalaya to control illegal immigrants from entering the state, apprehension of breakdown of law and order led to early closure of business and other establishments in Shillong.

To add to the apprehension of the public of worsening law and order problem, miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at Lumdiengjri which fortunately did not blasted.

Speaking to reporters on Friday Kharkrang assured that the focus of the police is to maintain law and orders at any cost.  He also sought people’s cooperation for maintenance of peace and tranquility in the city and said that miscreants should not be allowed to take advantage of the situation. He said people and the police should work together to ensure peace.

Kharkhrang also informed that patrolling in vulnerable areas of the district has been intensified and advisories have been issued to the government to take care of various government offices and vehicles. He also expressed confidence that people would not hesitate to come forward and inform police about any suspicion elements in their locality to prevent any kind of incident.-By Our Reporter
