Bangla encroach lands

SHILLONG, APR 27:  Bangladesh has allegedly encroached into Meghalaya border village’s land in Huroi and adjoining areas. It is alleged that few days ago new boundary pillars have been erected all along the borders adjacent Umpyrchin, Lahalein and Huroi boundary wherein the neighbouring country has taken about 100 meters of the cultivable land of residents in those areas

The Meghalaya Border Area Development Welfare Association (MBADWA) brought his new encroachment by the neighbouring country into the notice of the East Jaintia hills deputy commissioner and has requested him to act.

MBADWA president Lakhon Lamin said Bangladesh has encroached inside the country by “jumping over the existing boundary pillars number 1315, 1316, 1317 and others.” He said, “All these were done without informing the land owners and disrespecting us and out ancestral rights, including the prestige of our country.”

Lamin informed that the association had visited the areas at Umpyrchin and found that the cultivable land facing across the adjacent Lubha Cherra Tea Garden of one Targenson known as Nanka, which is inside Sylhet district of Bangladesh, new markings were found at about 200 feet inside the Indian territory.

Lamin also said the association told the East Jaintia hills deputy commissioner alleged that persons from Bangladesh had destroyed the plantations. He said they have urged the deputy commissioner to conduct immediate inspection as the people have fallen victims of “serious encroachment.”-By Our Reporter
