Bangladeshi robbers attack BSF personnel, villager in West Jaintia Hills

SHILLONG, JAN 8: A BSF personnel and a civilian were injured after they were attacked by a group of Bangladeshi robbers in two separate incidents in Dawki area along the international border in West Jaintia Hills District.

One SBBL gun and weapons of the BSF personnel were also snatched during the incidents.

Superintendent of Police Lakador Syiem informed that a group of around 10-15 Bangladeshi nationals came to the house of one Pratap Bareh of Amdoh village near Rongtilla border out-post (BOP), 5 kilometers away from Dawki and looted cash, mobils and 1 SBBL gun. The incident took place at around 12 am.

“In defense he (Bareh) had shot one round at the intruders before the gun was snatched from him,” Syiem said. Bareh was beaten up before he was attacked with a sharp weapon. He said on receiving information at around 3 am, immediately the officer in-charge of Dawki police station rushed to the area with the police party.

The SP further informed that another group of Bangladesh nationals also gheraoed and assaulted two BSF personnel near Rongtila BOP even as they snatched away their weapons. As a result, one of the BSF personnel was injured in the incident, he said.

Later, the weapons snatched from the BSF personnel were recovered after conducting a search in the jungle area nearby, he said.

Both injured persons were taken to Dawki PHC for medical treatment.

Meanwhile, the SP informed that the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) Meghalaya has visited Dawki and the places of occurrence to take stock of the situation following the two incidents and supervise the law and order arrangements in the presence of DC, SP, SDO, SDPO and officers of the BSF.

A flag meeting between the BSF and BGB was also held today, he said.
