BJP MDC demands action against culprits involved in raping minors in Garo Hills

BJP state vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N Marak on Monday sought the intervention of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma into the abduction, assault and raping of four minor tribal girls at Chenga Benga Mela in Garo Hills.

In a letter to Sangma, Marak said, “I strongly condemn the abduction, assault and raping of the four minor tribal girls at Chenga Benga Mela in Garo Hills where gang of miscreants suspected to be from across the border intruded into the mela and committed the crime and fled leaving the victims to an unforgivable and unforgettable horror.”

“FIR has been lodged therefore I urge upon the authorities from both the states to take immediate action tracking the culprits and arresting them and booking them under the appropriate sections. It is also requested that all assistance be provided to the victims in all possible way ensuring safety and support,” he said.

Marak said that it is very unfortunate that the organised and Ill intended cross border crimes has resurfaced in Meghalaya Assam border taking advantage of the loose security during election. The miscreants seem to have come to the mela with a plan which is ill intended, particularly targeting the tribal girls who unaware of the threat visited the mela.

“So, I request you to take immediate action to eliminate such threats that lurks in public gatherings threatening the innocent youths. Your prompt action will be an assurance that justice will be delivered at the earliest, and rigid action would be taken against those involved in the crime,” he stated in the letter.

“Secondly, an incident which took place at Ballonggre is also worth mentioning for your immediate action, where two girls (minors) were crushed and dragged by the dumper which fled leaving one of the girls severely injured,” he said while urging that immediate action is sought against the culprits whose recklessness has caused severe harm to the minors.

He also requested the government to provide proper assistance and support for the victims in all possible ways.
