SHILLONG, SEPT 23: Assembly Speaker AT Mondal and Health Minister Roshan Warjri today jointly released two books – on former Member of Parliament (L) PR Kyndiah and another on Meghalaya.

The book entitle – ‘PR Kyndiah – As I Know Him’ written by Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons talks about the personal admiration the author has for the political stalwart of the state with whom he had close association.

Apart from this, the book also take back the people of the state to the times when Kyndiah was elected as the Speaker of the state assembly and how he was instrumental in the downfall of the Purno A Sangma led Ministry in 1990 and the BB Lyngdoh Ministry in 1991.

The fall of the Congress led United Meghalaya Parliamentary Forum (UMPF) Ministry headed by Sangma led to subsequent formation of the Meghalaya United Parliamentary Party (MUPP) Ministry led by BB Lyngdoh.

During his tenure as the Speaker, Kyndiah had also disqualified five Independent MLAs under the Tenth Schedule in 1991.

The 962 pages book also includes speeches of Kyndiah at United Nations, in Lok Sabha on the Constitution 96th Amendment Bill on May 6, 2003 and in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Addressing during the release of the book, Mondal said, “PR Kyndiah was a legend in Meghalaya politics and his contributions was not only to the state but to the country as a whole.”

On being elevated to the post of Speaker, Mondal said that he got lots of tips from the former Speaker on how to conduct the proceedings of the House.

“When the no-confidence motion and resolution to remove the Speaker was brought recently, we had gone down to the proceedings conducted by Kyndiah and it has given us a lot of direction,” he said, while adding that the book will go a long way in helping the sitting legislators as well as those who intend to join politics.

About the book – ‘Meghalaya’ written by Prof Phibankhamti Ryngnga and Prof Siddeswar Sarma, Mondal said this is the first book about the state after the creation of four new districts.

Congratulating the authors, he said that the book, which attempt to cover wide range of readers, will be very useful not only to students but also research scholars.-By Our Reporter
