Border panel submits report to CM

The report was handed over by the chairman of the regional committee Sniawbhalang Dhar and home minister Lahkmen Rymbui.

“The Regional Committee, East Jaintia Hills District submitted their report today after many field inspections and visits to areas along the Meghalaya-Assam border,” Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted.

The other two regional committees for Ri Bhoi and West Khasi Hills have already submitted their respective reports last month.

Both Assam and Meghalaya have also exchanged reports for further examination.

Sangma had informed that very soon both the Chief Ministers of the two states will meet to take final call for resolving the first phase of six areas of difference shared between Assam and Meghalaya.

The six areas of difference include Tarabari (4.69 sq km), Gizang (13.53 sq km), Hahim (3.51 sq km), Boklapara (1.57 sq kms), Khanapara-Pilangkata (2.29 sq kms) and Ratacherra (11.20 sq kms).

Earlier, headman of Ratacherra Desous Pohshna had maintained that Assam’s declaration that Ratacherra is part of the Borail Wildlife Sanctuary is totally illegal.

He had claimed that the Borail Wildlife Sanctuary in Cachar Hills is located on the other side of Ratacherra.

“I had also questioned one of the Assam officials as to what made him claim that Ratacherra is part of the wildlife sanctuary when the entire village is a betel nut garden. How can you declare a wildlife sanctuary in people’s betel nut garden?” he said.

Ratacherra, which was established in 1951, has a total of 287 households with over 2,228 population.
